60 days

Losing job-based coverage opens a Special Enrollment Period, even outside Open Enrollment.

Your 60-day window starts when your coverage ends

Job-based coverage usually ends on your last day or at the end of that month. From that date, you have 60 days to choose a Marketplace plan. You can also choose one up to 60 days before your coverage ends, so there's no gap. All times are Eastern Time (Orlando).

COBRA or a Marketplace plan? You choose.

Your former employer may offer COBRA, which lets you keep the same plan, usually at the full cost plus a small fee. A Marketplace plan may cost less, especially if your income has dropped, because help paying premiums is based on what you expect to earn this year.

• COBRA: same plan and doctors, often the highest monthly cost
• Marketplace plan: new plan, with premium help based on your expected income and household size
• Medicaid or Florida KidCare: we'll check whether anyone in your household may qualify

We'll put them side by side so you can decide with clear numbers, not guesses.

We help people in every kind of transition

If your job-based coverage is ending, one of these probably sounds familiar.

Laid off or downsized

Your position was cut. Your coverage doesn't have to be. Losing job-based coverage opens a 60-day window to enroll.

When the whole company changes, your health plan shouldn't be the thing you lose sleep over.

Hours cut, coverage lost

Moved to part-time and lost eligibility for the company plan? That can open a Special Enrollment Period too.

Coming off COBRA

When COBRA runs out or your former employer stops paying its share, you may be able to switch to a Marketplace plan.

Questions people ask after a job loss

How long do I have to get new coverage after losing my job?

You have 60 days from the day your job-based coverage ends to choose a Marketplace plan. You can also choose one up to 60 days before it ends, so your new plan can start right when the old one stops. See HealthCare.gov for the official rules.

When does my new plan start?

Generally on the first day of the month after you choose a plan. If you choose before your old coverage ends, your new plan can start the first day of the month after it ends.

Should I take COBRA or a Marketplace plan?

It depends on your doctors, your expected income, and how long you expect to be between jobs. COBRA keeps your current plan but you usually pay the full cost. A Marketplace plan may cost less if you qualify for premium help. We'll compare both with you.

Does it matter whether I was laid off, quit, or let go?

No. If you leave a job for any reason and lose your job-based coverage, you can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Dropping coverage voluntarily while you're still employed generally doesn't qualify on its own.

Can I get help paying premiums if my income just dropped?

Possibly. Premium help is based on your expected household income for the whole year, including pay before the job loss, severance, and unemployment benefits. Some households earn too much or too little to qualify, so we'll estimate it with you and check Medicaid and Florida KidCare for your family, too.

What documents will I need?

Something that shows your name and the date your coverage ended or will end, such as a letter from your former employer or insurer. Keep any COBRA notice too.

What happens when I start a new job?

If your new employer offers coverage, you can usually move to it. Report the change to the Marketplace so your premium help is updated, and we'll help you time the switch so there's no gap.

Does it cost anything to work with Orca?

No. There's no fee and no obligation. Marketplace premiums are the same whether you enroll with a licensed agent or on your own.

You focus on the next job. We've got your coverage.

Pick a time that works for you, and a licensed local agent will walk you through your options. Your 60-day window starts when your coverage ends, so it pays to start early.
